 basilica

Also known as the Festival of the Blooming Rose but today is the day in honour of St Mark, the city’s patron saint whose relic was smuggled into Venice from Alexandria, Egypt in year 828 by 2 Venetian merchants Buono da Malamocco and Rustico da Torcello.

For Venetians, this day is also an occassion when Venetian males gives the bocolo (red rose bloom) to their beloved ladies. The colour red is also a symbolic token of the Patron Saint.

The Basilica Church on Piazza San Marco on this day will have 2 masses , one in the morning at 1030am and the other at 530pm.
